THE SILENT BOOK | Three Short Stories By Dave Eggers

The book is designed as part of the Porto Summer school programme, taken in the summer of 2018. Three short stories by Dave Eggers were assigned to each designer to create a publication that links them together with addingv an extra element to the design. The concept of the design lies on the fact of the stories being merely records of daily life occasions with no moral or message intended to reach the readers. The three stories are each of a different length.

A system is created for the designed publication where each story runs in a continuous column based grid along the pages. Each story is divided into 21 incidents that lead to each other hence 21 spreads. Story 1 fits into column 1 of pages 1 and 2 and so forth for the remaining respectively. This creates a rythm in the flow of the incidents per spread that on a macro leve become just blocks of text blocked for it is not even imortant to read them through.

With every incident / spread, there are outside incidents happening around the world. Therefore random recorded news were collected as text and images that were then placed in with the grid and these become the readable parts of the book. Yet nothing leads to the other as this is a record for daily life happenings around the world...

Therefore it is a silent book that becomes a visual graphic record.
